The fifth graders had two special guests in their classroom this week. Keith teacher, author, and publisher Mrs. Angela Malavolti visited Mrs. Heystek’s class along with local illustrator and artist Angie Scordato. They were both interviewed by the fifth graders because the class is working on creating their own realistic fiction picture books. Who better to learn from than local professionals!
In addition to learning about writing, the fifth graders also received a “sneak peak” of the book, Namaste:A Little Yoga Folk’s Tale, which was written by local author, Tammie Ciciura. Mrs. Malavolti is the editor and publisher of the book and Mrs. Scordato is the illustrator. The book will be published in the spring and the fifth graders will receive an invitation to the official release party! This was a wonderful opportunity for our Keith students to meet with “such amazing mentors in our learning community” and “it helped our students know that all authors have the same struggles and celebrations while also showing that they too can become published authors” according to Mrs. Heystek. After this inspiring day with professional authors and illustrators, the fifth graders are ready and excited to begin writing their own picture books which will be completed in February.
