Dr. Heeren comes to Keith with 26 years of global teaching experience at the collegiate level, focusing on teaching English to non-native speakers in Taiwan. In addition to a B.A. in history she earned from DePaul University, Dr. Heeren also holds an M.A. in Humanities from California State University – Dominguez Hills as well as a Ph.D. in English from National Kaohshing Normal University in Taiwan.
Most recently Dr. Heeren served as an Assistant Professor at I-Shou University in Taiwan, where she taught English and mentored undergraduate students. While in this position she also served as a leader of the Teacher Growth Group “Bridging the English Gap between International and Taiwanese Students” to further engage students and staff in the subject matter outside of the classroom.
During her career as a university professor Dr. Heeren has been published in several educational scholarly journals, including the Journal of Language and Education Policy and the International Journal of Humanities Social Sciences and Education, among others. She also has co-authored several books on ESL, and individually authored the book Business Basically, which contains 18 concise business-themed lessons for ESL learners.
Dr. Heeren is excited to blend her global experience with her teaching philosophy at Keith, which focuses on creating an atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing their ideas and voicing their opinions. Through continual encouragement and mutual respect, she strives to keep students engaged and active with her lessons. She feels that students learn from each other, and one of the best ways to retain new information is to participate in the discovery process – with peers.
